A Unique Collaboration: Italian Bio Functional Design, Traditional Japanese architecture, carpentry and permaculture landscaping. This project is a fusion of “Italian taste, elegance  into Japanese zen architectural principles, and the timeless artistry of traditional Sashimono Japanese carpentry.

Conceived by Dario Calvaruso, Bio Functional Design embraces art, bio-science and trasformative lifestyle. It consists in harmoniously planning a “Space for Life” rather than a “Living Space”. Dario Calvaruso’s Bio Functional Design is a space where natural environments, humans and structures not only synergistically coexist but nourish each other by becoming one undistinguished entity or ecosystem. Bio Functional Design considers the principles concerned with the nature and appreciation of beauty, along with functional landscaping creating an ecosystem intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient while also producing transformative human-biomechanics and biological changes in the individual. Thus Bio Functional Design involves a detailed planning of how human movements interact with the structures and environment along with the effects of that natural elements such as light (sun / circadian rhythm, bio-thermic  system), water (river / water flow / drainages) , wind (ventilation), space (rocks, gravel, emptiness) and geological conditions (soils, plants) affect human health and well-being.

Awarded first prize as “Outstanding Construction” in 2024 and featured in major Japanese architecture and design magazines, as well as in a Japanese culture film documentary, this property is one of Yakushima’s (屋久島) most well-located, preserved, yet easily accessible and stunning estates. Built entirely from organic, natural materials such as fragrant Yakushima cedar, granite, copper finishes, earthen terracotta tiles, and other local resources, its design reflects the Jomon period and traditional Japanese Zen culture. This eco-friendly and sustainable property is perfect for those who deeply appreciate nature, tradition, and sophisticated design.
